Permethrin: Odorless Clothing Repellent As Effective As 100% DEET

When it comes to wearing insect repellents, we have it all backwards. Our first priority is generally to rush to a skin repellent. However, you should really be preparing your clothing first and then worrying about any exposed skin. With Sawyer Permethrin, you get an odorless barrier of insect repellent that is both as effective as 100% DEET and lasts up to six washings.

Sawyer Permethrin was developed from, and is the artificial analog of, naturally occurring pyrethrum from flowers. It is an odorless repellent that also kills ticks and mosquitoes.

More insect-borne diseases are transmitted by ticks, in the United States, than by any other insect. A bloodthirsty tick can carry many different pathogens, including bacteria, rickettsia, viruses, protozoa and parasites. Although Lyme disease accounts for the majority of diagnosed tick-borne disease cases, there are several other important illnesses that can be transmitted from a tick bite. Before your next great adventure out of doors, protect yourself from insect-borne diseases by using a Sawyer Permethrin repellent.

If your outdoor experience calls for you to camp out-of-doors in a nylon (synthetic) tent or under mosquito netting, be sure to treat bedding or tent netting, flaps and zippers with a Sawyer Permethrin spray to keep flying and crawling insects away at night.

Sawyer Permethrin repellents are specially formulated so not to stain or damage your clothing, other fabrics, gear and equipment, including plastics or finished surfaces. It's odorless after drying, and some formulas are odorless during spray application. One application to your outdoor clothing can last up to 6 washings. This insect repellent chemically bonds itself to the fabric fibers as a part of the drying process. The fiber bonding allows the Permethrin molecules to keep on working to defend you, even through the roughest days outdoors and with repeated washings.

Sawyer's line of Permethrin clothing insect repellent is available in a 9 ounce aerosol spray, a 6 ounce pump and spray, as well as a 12 ounce and 24 ounce economical trigger spray.

To maximize the effectiveness of the Permethrin fabric treatment, use the following tips and tricks:

  1. For treatment of packs, tents, camp chairs, and other non washable items the application will last through 42 days of exposure to sun and air.
  2. Treating a tent and camp chairs while camping is an excellent source of bug protection.
  3. When treating clothing, Sawyer recommends 3 ounces of formula per garment. It does not matter whether the garment is a size small or extra large; you are seeking the molecules in 3 ounces of the formula to protect you. If you are treating your socks, they count in the overall application as well and the formula used is part of the 6 ounces needed to treat an outfit. Applying less than 3 ounces per garment will lead to unsatisfactory results.
  4. The more permethrin molecules in the area the greater your overall protection. Treating your shirt and pants is much more effective than just treating one of the garments. Also treating your back pack significantly adds to the protection from your shirt and pants.
  5. While ticks usually find you at the ankle level (be sure to treat the socks and pants) they can also climb bushes and find you at a higher level so be sure to treat your shirt as well if you are around bushes and concerned about ticks.
  6. Sweating and exposure to water does not significantly deteriorate the application. It is primarily the agitation of a washing machine which deteriorates the permethrin application as it knocks the molecules loose from the fabric. For best results Sawyer recommends hand washing and air drying. When using a conventional washer and dryer, use the gentle wash and dry cycles. Loss due to the dryer is limited compared to the detergent and washer agitation. Dry cleaning removes the permethrin from the fabric.
  7. Storing garments in dark plastic bags between uses helps to preserve the application.
  8. Do not expose cats to wet permethrin as it affects their central nervous system. This is not true with dogs, horses, or cows. Cats can be around permethrin treated fabrics once the application has dried.
